Anyway, I think Elac debut B5 is as good as B6, if "NOT" better esp. In my humble opinions, after living with them for many months, I can assure that they are all very good speakers as reviewed by Stereophile and else where. The black trace in fig.3 is the complex sum of the woofer and port outputs the broad peak in the upper bass is an artifact of the nearfield measurement technique, the B6's low frequencies extending cleanly down to the port tuning frequency, where the output is down by 6dB in textbook fashion. However, there is a discontinuity in the port's rolloff, as well as a small glitch in the woofer's output, at the frequency of the strong panel resonance. (The port resonance holds the woofer stationary at its tuning frequency.) The port's own output (red trace) peaks between 35 and 70Hz, and its upper-frequency rollout is free from high-level resonant modes. This is confirmed by the nearfield measurement of the woofer's response (fig.3, blue trace), which has a sharply defined notch at that frequency. The saddle centered on 48Hz in the impedance magnitude trace in fig.1 suggests that this is the tuning frequency of the flared port on the cabinet's rear panel. Herb Reichert commented that the B6 "seems to like tubes." Indeed it does, and the shape of the solid impedance trace in this graph does suggest that the speaker's treble will be a little higher in level when connected to a tube amplifier's 8 ohm taps (again, see later).įig.2 Elac Debut B6, cumulative spectral-decay plot calculated from output of accelerometer fastened to center of top panel (MLS driving voltage to speaker, 7.55V measurement bandwidth, 2kHz). With a minimum value of 6 ohms at 190Hz and an electrical phase angle that is high only when the impedance magnitude is also high, this will be a very easy load for the partnering amplifier to drive. I have plotted how the Elac's impedance varies with frequency on a more extended vertical scale than usual (fig.1), as the magnitude remains above my usual 20-ohm scale limit for the entire treble region. I suspect that this difference is due to the B6's behavior in the top octaves (see later). My estimate of the Elac B6's voltage sensitivity was 85dB/2.83V/m, which is 2dB below the specified 87dB/2.83V/m. worth keeping an eye on ebay as at $450 these are a really great deal.I used DRA Labs' MLSSA system and a calibrated DPA 4006 microphone to measure the Elac Debut B6's frequency response in the farfield for the nearfield frequency response, I used an Earthworks QTC-40, which has a ¼" capsule and thus doesn't present a significant obstacle to the sound. They sound really good with my 125 watt Class D Sonos AMP for streaming, but they sound excellent with my mid 70's Pioneer/turntable setup.ī6 - bass-heavy, smooth, forgiving, warm, funī6.2 - lean, forward, accurate, cold, boringĭBR62 - balanced, warm, detailed, polite, engaging The thing about the DBR62 that has been noted by many reviewers, and I agree, is that they scale well with higher quality amps. I tend to like this kind of sound, so I've enjoyed them but lately have been wondering what a more "exciting" pair of speakers may do in my space. ![]() they are probably pretty polite, warm and laid-back, which is why some youtube reviewers found them boring. Despite the more extended top-end, they're not fatiguing and compared to speakers from say, Klipsch, KEF etc. The highs will be noticeably more detailed and extended but never harsh or sibilant. The midrange will retain the lush character but sound a bit more "natural" for lack of a better term, and in better balance with the lows/highs. If you like the sound of the original B6, the debut series (in my room) has just as much bass output, but with slightly more texture. They are really like a mashup of the first two iterations, with an extra dash of refinement/smoothness. I lived with them for awhile but last year bought some used DBR62's on ebay for $450, and immediately fell in love with the sound. ![]() They really "audiophiled" it in a way that disagreed with my personal tastes. Way less bass, a more forward, almost shouty mid-range and highs that border on harsh, neutral, clinical etc. Unfortunately I found it's a completely different speaker with a much different tonality and freq. A few years later I bought a pair of the 6.2's hoping it would be an improvement on the originals as many of the reviews claimed. Was always a big fan of the sound - solid bass and a smooth presentation. I've heard the original B6's pretty extensively, as my father bought a pair when they first came out. Here's my experience with the Elac Debut lineup: ![]()
